Leading shopping centers, retailers, shopping districts and outlets throughout the USA are welcoming China Lunar New Year with special events and gifts with purchase. The Year of the Monkey begins on February 8, 2016 and promises good fortune and playful fun!

“The year of the Monkey is ideal for a quantum leap in your life! Now is the time to shake things up, create change, and innovate a new path. Join Monkey’s enthusiast energy when risks are rewarded and anything can happen. Even the most ambitious plans can succeed. There will be more than enough action and opportunity to keep you busy. In Monkey year, it’s fine to just make it up as you go along. Just don’t be gullible and trust the wrong people, or wily Monkey will take all the peanuts and leave you only shells,” per astrologer Susan Levitt.

“Madison Street to Madison Ave” will feature lion dancers, family‐friendly entertainment, special performances and retail promotions in the week preceding the historic Chinatown event in New York City

Chinatown Partnership, East Midtown Partnership, Madison Avenue  Business Improvement District and SUNY’s Confucius Institute for Business (CIB) announced that they  will be coming together for the first time ever to present "Madison Street to Madison Avenue,” a Chinese Lunar New Year  celebration taking place the week preceding the traditional Chinatown parade in New York City. The celebrations will take place on Saturday, February 6, beginning on Madison Street in Chinatown, travelling to the Upper East Side and East Midtown. The multi-faceted -event is expected to attract local families and visitors for live entertainment and cultural activities.

Notable attendees include YUE‐SAI KAN, Emmy‐winning television host and producer; MICHELLE LEE, leader, the Bund Association for Promotion of Commerce and Trade (Shanghai); DUNCAN EDWARDS, President and CEO of Hearst Magazines International; JEANNETTE CHANG, Sr. VP & Publishing Director for Hearst Magazines International; and CHINESE AND NYC GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS.

"This is the first time in Chinese American history that this widely celebrated event will travel to the Upper East Side and East Midtown in New York City,” said Wellington Chen, Executive Director of Chinatown Partnership. “It is a momentous occasion for our community and we’re excited to bring children, parents, visitors and local leaders together to include them in our festive celebration”

Traditional Chinese lion dancers and dragons will make their way from Chinatown to the Upper East Side in a decorated double decker bus, arriving at Madison Avenue and East 76th street where special guests will make welcoming remarks and participate in a celebratory ribbon cutting. A signing ceremony will take place announcing a Sister-Street partnership between the Madison Avenue BID and Shanghai’s Bund Association for Promotion of Commerce & Trade. The Lion Dancers will then make their way south on Madison Avenue to East Midtown, stopping at select retailers that are offering Lunar New Year promotions to commemorate the turn of the Chinese calendar. Retailers include Baccarat, Bally, CH Carolina Herrera, Chopard, Coach, Dennis Basso, Emilio Pucci, Fendi, Michael Kors, Mulberry, NARS and more.

“We are honored to work with our fellow BIDs and SUNY’s Confucius Institute for Business to create this important cultural and economic development initiative,” said Matthew Bauer, President of the Madison Avenue BID. “ Madison Avenue is a prime destination for the Chinese visitor market, and the partnership that we are entering with Shanghai’s Bund Association for Promotion of Commerce & Trade will further spread the word about the shopping & hospitality services offered by our members.”

Entering into East Midtown, the celebrations continue with families, neighbors and visitors congregating at the Harman Store and 527 Madison (54th & Madison Ave) to enjoy family‐friendly entertainment and engaging activities including Chinese face painting, calligraphy and a themed photo booth. There will also be special performances by the New York Eastern Chamber Orchestra conducted by Dr. Fei Fang and traditional Chinese face changing by Peng Li.

This year marks the first time in New York history that three business improvement districts have come  together in a significant partnership to celebrate this traditional event that is now listed on the public  school calendar, allowing the city’s Asian families to celebrate the holiday.
